Why I Can’t Go Back to Supporting Puffy
I used to somewhat admire Puffy. I have a few songs he collaborated. He was self-made, and I really liked that he came out to encourage and support voting. However, there was always a part of me that didn’t like how he treated those young people on Making the Band. He belittled them in front of a national audience. They were already hungry to enter the music industry…he didn’t have to make them prove it.
The biggest and most important reasons are: the domestic violence and drug abuse. However, this another factor that stuck out to me.
I’ve been watching the recaps of the trial, and I realized KK was getting paid way more and seemed to be treated much better than Capricorn Clark. Capricorn was put through a lot of trauma and still wanted to work for Puff. Her career is in shambles now, as a single parent with a special needs child. She testified that she made $70 or $80k a year. Don’t get me wrong, that’s decent money, but it isn’t KK’s money. It’s not even what his assistant Brendan Paul was getting. So why the salary difference? Why the humiliation on top of the low pay?
Some of y’all cheered, and some of y’all were angry about the verdicts.
The fact that he underpaid “our” people and put them through so much trauma. Some of you may look at this as a minor issue in the big picture. But to me, it’s just another example of the same old problem: the pay disparity, especially when it comes to Black people…and ultimately, Black women.
